¡®France¡¯ Review : A Fiction Inside a Nonfiction
À̷縮 °³²Æ÷½ºÆ® Çлý±âÀÚ | ½ÂÀÎ 2023.03.26 19:23

The film's opening sequence features a familiar face. It is Emmanuel Macron, the current president of France. Star reporter 'France,' who attended the president's press conference, asks the president a quick question. "I can't help but ask about the rebellious situation that runs through French society. Are you indifferent? Is it lethargic?" However, she is busy giving her manager a thumbs-up and receiving winks and laughter after asking the question. She doesn't care about the president's answer, and her only interest is whether her aggressive question will be able to bring a significant impact on social media.

The film, released in January 2022, is titled <France>. It is a masterpiece that has advanced to the finals of the 74th Cannes International Film Festival with a collaboration between master Breno Dumont, who never stops trying new things, and France's leading actress Leah Sedu.

The main character France is a journalist whose bluff of fame has eroded. She deliberately drives herself and her staff to dangerous situations, such as crossing the sea with refugees in a boat to capture only provocative scenes, not to inform the horrors of the war truthfully. This appearance of France accuses the ugly reality of the media and criticizes the hypocrisy of France, her home country, which is the same as her name.

Another point of this film is France's extreme depression, which shows the appearance of a star reporter who is very unstable inside. The movie is like a black comedy in which she, who broadcasts the pain of others, suffers from depression in a one-on-one relationship with a specific person and collides with the following pain.

The attempt to make the vast amount of satire, which includes individuals, media, and the nation, as only one character, contributes to the film's abstruseness, but it highlights Dumont's spirit of challenge. The film delves into the life of France. The star reporter, which needs clarification about the truth and falsehood, looks into France, her home country, same name, asking questions about France and the whole European countries with colossal deceit.
