The World Baseball Classic (WBC) ends on March 22nd. The World Baseball Classic is an international baseball tournament hosted by the American Major League Baseball Secretariat and the Players Association. It is seen as a baseball world championship that selects the strongest baseball nations in the world. It is the most prestigious tournament among the current international baseball tournaments, and if you think about it, it is the Baseball World Cup.

The WBC, which was first held in 2006, held the 2nd competition in 2009, and since then, it has been held once every four years. A total of 20 countries will participate, and the top two teams in each group will advance to the quarterfinals after going through the group stage in groups of 4 countries. After that, the winner is determined according to the tournament format. Since baseball consumes less physical strength than soccer, games are given a few rest days between rounds, so the finals are played quickly.

Lee Kang-Cheol, currently the manager of the professional baseball team KT wiz belonging to the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO), was selected as the manager of the WBC and led the Korean national team but recorded two wins and 2 losses in the first round of the finals. They finished in 3rd place and failed to advance to the quarterfinals. The top eight countries were Cuba, Italy, Japan, Australia, the USA, Mexico, Venezuela, and Puerto Rico. After 15 days of long-term politics, the United States and Japan faced each other in the final. After a close first-point match, Japan won the championship with a score of 3:2. The MVP of this tournament is Japan's ace, Shohei Ohtani, who was selected as one of the 100 major league players in 2023.

Contrary to Japan, which embraced the honor of winning the championship and became a solid baseball powerhouse, the atmosphere of the Republic of Korea has changed dramatically. The Korean national team, which was ranked 4th in the world and had a lot of expectations, had a bad performance, and the KBO issued an apology. The people's dissatisfaction disappeared slowly. Nevertheless, instead of just criticizing the players who did their best, I hope that the people will come together and cheer for the moment Korean baseball will see the light again.

월드 베이스볼 클래식 2023

월드 베이스볼 클래식(WBC)이 지난 3월 22일 화려하게 막을 내렸다. 월드베이스볼 클래식은 미국 메이저리그 사무국과 선수협회가 주관하는 국가 대항 국제 야구 대회이며 전세계에서 야구 최강국을 가려내는 야구 세계 선수권 대회라고 볼 수 있다. 현 국제 야구 대회중에선 가장 권위있는 대회이며 쉽게 생각하면 야구 월드컵인 셈이다. 

2006년에 처음 개최되었던 WBC는 2009년 2회 대회를 개최하였고 이후 4년에 한번씩 개최되었으나 2021년 코로나의 여파로 5회 대회의 개최가 연기되어 이번 2023년에 개최되었다. 총 20개국이 참가하고 4개 국가씩 조를 이루어 조별예선을 거친 후 각조의 상위 두개 팀이 8강 토너먼트에 진출하게 된다. 그 이후에는 토너먼트 형식을 따라 우승자를 가려내게 되는데 야구는 축구에 비해 체력 소모가 비교적 적기 때문에 경기와 경기 사이에 휴일도 많이 주어지지 않아 결승전까지 금방 치뤄진다.

현재 한국 프로야구협회(KBO) 소속 프로야구팀 KT wiz의 감독인 이강철은 WBC 감독으로 발탁되어 한국 대표팀을 이끌었으나 본선 1라운드에서 2승 2패를 기록, 3위에 머물며 8강 진출에 실패했다. 

8강 진출국은 쿠바, 이탈리아, 일본, 호주, 미국, 멕시코, 베네수엘라, 푸에르토리코였다. 15일간의 대장정 끝에 결승에서는 미국과 일본이 맞붙었고 1점차 접전 끝에 일본이 3:2 스코어로 우승을 차지하게 되었다. 

이번 대회의 MVP는 일본의 에이스이자 2023 메이저리그 선수 100인에 1위로 꼽힌 오타니 쇼헤이가 선정되었다. 우승의 영예를 안고 확실한 야구강국으로 자리잡은 일본에 반해 대한민국의 분위기는 사뭇 달랐다. 

세계 순위 4위로 많은 기대를 모았던 우리 대표팀이었지만 좋지 못한 성적을 거두며 KBO는 사과문을 발표했지만 국민들의 아쉬움은 쉽게 사그라들지 않고 있다. 그럼에도 최선을 다한 선수들에게 고맙고 비난만 하는 것이 아닌 한국 야구가 다시 한번 빛을 보게 되는 순간이 빨리 오길 온 국민이 하나되어 응원해주면 좋겠다.
