Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell returned to Capitol Hill on Wednesday for his second day of testimony after telling lawmakers Tuesday that the central bank would consider raising interest rates by another 0.5 percentage points later this month.

Powell also told a Senate committee on Tuesday that Fed officials are likely to raise interest rates higher this year than previously expected to control inflation. In December, most thought they would raise the benchmark federal funds rate to between 5% and 5.5% this year and hold it there through 2024.

He said hotter inflation and hiring could lead central bank officials to raise rates by less than a quarter of a point on their recently adopted rate-hike strategy.

Fed officials slowed the pace of rate hikes last month, raising the federal funds rate by 0.4 points to a range between 4.5% and 4.75%. It followed gains of 0.75 basis points in December, 0.75 points in November, and more significant 0.5 points or 50 basis points in the previous three meetings.

Last month, officials said moving in smaller steps would help them assess the impact of last year's sharp hikes and reduce the risk of raising rates too much.

The size of the next rate hike will be influenced by government reports on Friday's February employment and next week's inflation, Powell said.

Since Fed officials last met on Feb. 1, several economic reports have indicated that January employment, spending, and inflation were stronger than expected. More importantly, in the data revision, inflation and labor demand have not softened as much as they were first reported at the end of last year.

다음 금리 인상의 규모는 금요일 2월 고용과 다음주 인플레이션에 대한 정부 보고서의 영향을 받을 것이라고 파월은 말했다.

지난 2월 1일 연준 관리들이 만난 이후 여러 경제 보고서에서 1월 고용, 지출, 인플레이션이 예상보다 강했다고 밝혔다. 더 중요한 것은 데이터 수정에서 인플레이션과 노동 수요가 작년 말에 처음 보고된만큼 완화되지 않았다는 것이다.
