The accessibility of firearms in the United States is a hotly debated topic, with questions about whether restricted access to lethal weapons increases or decreases safety. While school shooting rates are drastically higher in America than in any other country, they have been pushed even further in recent years.   

According to NBC News, a recent attack at Lamar High School in Texas resulted in the loss of innocent lives. As the year 2022 has had more school shootings than in any other year after 1999, parents in America are left to question the safety of their children due to the boundless possibilities of areas gun violence can occur. With firearms so easily accessible in many U.S. states, the risk of them falling into the wrong hands is a constant and inevitable threat.

The American government's most recent change to gun control was on June 25, 2022. According to BBC News, the change was Joe Biden, the current U.S. president, signing a law landmark gun control bill that will bring a more challenging check, dissuading young, new buyers from impulse purchasing firearms and encouraging states to restrict access to guns more strongly. Despite how promising this action by the government may seem, the impediment of diminishing gun violence still stands as a threat. 

Ultimately, it is up to the U.S. government to take meaningful action to prevent gun violence from continuing to escalate. It will require effective gun control measures and efforts to address the underlying social and psychological issues contributing to this epidemic. By working together, we can create a safer future for all Americans.
