DementiaWhat is Dementia?

As we age, our brains change. Normal brain aging may entail slower processing rates and more problems multitasking, but routine memory, skills, and knowledge remain stable and may even improve with age. One of the most known conditions connected to aging is Dementia.

It is prevalent in various age-related brain illnesses, leading to progressive cognitive loss. Due to a high aging rate, dementia-related illnesses currently afflict roughly 50 million people globally. Additionally, to patients, these neurodegenerative disorders have a substantial impact on family members, caretakers, and other health professionals, hence generating a public health cost that in 2020 accounted for over 1 trillion USD.

Dementia is caused by damage to brain cells. This injury interferes with the ability of brain cells to communicate with one another. Thinking, behavior, and feelings can be impaired when brain cells cannot interact regularly. The brain is divided into numerous unique areas, each of which is in charge of a different task (such as memory, judgment, or movement). When cells in a particular region are injured, that region cannot carry out their functions normally.

To cure Dementia, doctors will address whatever is causing it. About 20% of the causes of Dementia are reversible. If the cause of a person's Dementia is not reversible, treatment will focus on controlling symptoms, notably agitation and other emotional issues. If your loved one is in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease, the most prevalent form of Dementia, their doctor may suggest infusion therapy.

Drugs such as acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (for example, donepezil and galantamine) can occasionally assist in halting the advancement of cognitive impairments. However, quite often, the benefits of drugs are only moderate and cannot prevent the final worsening of the underlying illness.
