South Korea, one of the fastest-growing countries, has received much attention from many countries and investigators. There are many reasons why they pay attention to South Korea. First, South Korea has large corporations. Second, Korean culture is in vogue all over the world. Despite these reasons, people believe that investment in Korea is not a good idea.
The biggest reason people are unlikely to invest in South Korea is economic reliance on a few large corporations. No one can deny that Korean conglomerate stocks are economically valuable. However, according to the Asia Economy article, the proportion of large companies among all Korean companies is significantly low at 0.09%. It ranks 15th among 19 OECD countries regarding dependence on large companies. As an illustration, Samsung and Hyundai have gotten recognition from many countries and investigators. On the other hand, new investment companies have yet to come up. This phenomenon creates a risk of over-concentration and a need for more diversification for investors.
Another reason is low economic stability. There are reasons why people think the Korean economy is unstable. First, according to the Joongang article, South Korea has the highest level of household debt in the world, which could lead to a slowdown in consumer spending and economic growth. In addition, geopolitical tensions could be created due to North Korea's nuclear weapons program and its relations with South Korea, which could lead to market volatility and economic uncertainty. Finally, Korea's economy also includes currency risks. The South Korean currency unit is subject to fluctuations against other major currencies, which could impact returns for foreign investors. For example, according to BBC News Korea, because the FED raised the interest rate, the won's dollar exchange rate exceeded 1,400 won per dollar, which was 1,160 before.
Then how the Korean government and citizens can solve this problem and make better investment conditions? The government should focus on paying off the country's debt and stabilizing the value of its currency by investing in the form of paying back money after settling down rather than providing free money to the country. Not only government should change, but also citizens should analyze small companies themselves to prove that no matter whether small or big Korean companies include potential. These solutions will help stabilize the economy and help the economy develop in various fields.
