The Controversy of Fast Fashion
이다인 강남포스트 학생기자 | 승인 2023.05.03 14:03

Fast fashion is a term used to describe readily available, inexpensive fashion. It is a design, manufacturing, and marketing method focused on rapidly producing high volumes of clothing, leveraging trend replication and low-quality materials to bring inexpensive styles to the consumer.

Characterized by the mass production of cheap and trendy clothes, fast fashion results in significant environmental and labor issues. The industry relies heavily on plastic fabrics, which are non-biodegradable and contribute to ocean microplastic pollution. The production process also generates a significant carbon footprint, exacerbating climate change. Garments are also often produced in sweatshops, where workers face poor working conditions, low wages, and exploitation.

The rapid disposal of garments also increases landfill waste, as many discarded items are not recycled or repurposed. Slow fashion offers an alternative with mindful manufacturing, fair labor practices, and environmentally friendly materials.

As we continuously encourage the fashion industry to move towards a more sustainable and ethical future, it is essential to recognize the environmental and ethical implications of fast fashion to take steps to promote a more sustainable and ethical fashion industry.
