Ando Tadao and Concrete

Ando Tadao's use of concrete in the Bonte Museum showcases his unique approach to the material, expanding its function beyond mere structural stability. Unlike the conventional perception of concrete as a thick material primarily used for safety and stability in construction, Tadao employs it to create a foundation encompassing various aesthetic aspects.

The Bonte Museum is an exemplary manifestation of this concept. The overall structure itself is remarkable, but it is the meticulous attention to detail in the interior that holds architectural significance. The museum features five distinct exhibition routes, showcasing a range of artworks including sculptures and paintings. However, what stands out is the consistent use of a monochromatic color scheme, combining the concrete elements with white walls. The matte finish of the concrete surfaces not only imparts a sense of simplicity but also fosters harmony within the space. By eschewing contrasting color schemes, the museum design allows the artists' intentions to take center stage. The focus is solely on the artworks, as the subdued color palette creates a serene backdrop that accentuates their presence.

Furthermore, the strategic placement of windows at floor level, along with the gentle yellow lighting, enhances the exhibition experience. The light delicately highlights the artwork without interfering with its essence. Additionally, the sporadic arrangement of large rectangular windows serves a dual purpose. They not only frame different angles of Jeju's natural surroundings, effectively transforming the museum into a canvas for the surrounding landscape, but they also integrate the prolific nature into its ambiance.

Ando Tadao's visionary use of concrete in the Bonte Museum goes beyond conventional notions of the material. Through carefully curating aesthetics, color schemes, lighting, and window placement, he creates a space that harmoniously blends art, architecture, and nature, offering visitors a unique and immersive experience.
