Fitch Ratings examines whether the US should maintain its highest credit rating as the White House and Republicans struggle to reach an agreement on raising the debt ceiling.

Fitch said Wednesday evening it set the US's triple-A credit rating to "rating watch negative." Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the US could start missing payments as early as June 1.

Fitch said that if he didn't pay after June 1, he wouldn't match his Triple-A rating. S&P downgraded the US credit rating in 2011 after a similar confrontation with the debt ceiling.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-California) is demanding that Democrats agree to cut federal spending in order to support House Republicans raising the national borrowing ceiling by about $31.4 trillion.

The US government's reputation for paying its bills on time is a cornerstone of the global financial system. Investors around the world view government bonds as safe haven assets close to cash. Doubts about the Treasury's ability to pay bills can have far-reaching consequences.

US stocks across the board declined this week as investors analyzed the progress of the debt ceiling negotiations. The ultra-short-term Treasury market has been particularly volatile, with yields on securities maturing on Wednesday, June 1, soaring from 5.98% on Tuesday to more than 7.1% on Wednesday.

피치, 미국 신용등급 강등 고려

Fitch Ratings는 백악관과 공화당이 부채 한도 인상에 대한 합의에 도달하기 위해 고군분투하는 가운데 미국이 최고 신용 등급을 유지해야 하는지 여부를 조사한다.

Fitch는 수요일 저녁 미국의 트리플 A 신용 등급을 "등급 감시 부정적"으로 설정했다고 말했다. 재닛 옐런 재무장관은 미국이 빠르면 6월 1일부터 지급 누락을 시작할 수 있다고 말했다.

피치는 6월 1일 이후에 돈을 지불하지 않으면 트리플 A 등급에 맞지 않을 것이라고 말했다. S&P는 2011년 부채 한도 문제로 미국 신용 등급을 하향 조정했다.

케빈 매카시 하원의장(공화-캘리포니아)은 공화당 하원의원들이 국가 차입 한도를 약 31조4000억 달러 늘리는 것을 지원하기 위해 민주당이 연방 지출을 삭감하는 데 동의할 것을 요구하고 있다.

청구서를 제시간에 지불하는 미국 정부의 명성은 글로벌 금융 시스템의 초석이다. 전 세계 투자자들은 국채를 현금에 가까운 안전한 자산으로 보고 있다. 재무부의 청구서 지불 능력에 대한 의심은 광범위한 결과를 초래할 수 있다.

투자자들이 부채 한도 협상의 진행 상황을 분석함에 따라 이번 주 미국 주식은 전반적으로 하락했다. 초단기 국채 시장은 6월 1일 수요일 만기가 도래하는 증권 수익률이 화요일 5.98%에서 수요일 7.1% 이상으로 치솟는 등 특히 변동성이 컸다.
